신비주의에서의 변화 기제 : 노르위치 줄리안의 고난 경험과 이해를 중심으로

본 소고는 인간의 고난/고통 경험과 변화에 대한 연구로서 신비주의 관점에서 변화가 어떻게 가능한지 그 핵심기제를 탐구한다. 이를 위한 연구대상으로 인류 역사 속 고난과 고통이 가장 극심했던 시기 중 하나인 14세기 영국의 신비주의 은수자 노르위치의 줄리안을 선택하여 특히 그녀의 고난에 대한 경험과 인식, 그리고 변화를 탐사한다. 연구방법으로 그녀가 체험하고 숙고한 계시들을 기록한 두 권의 텍스트들을 중심으로 문헌들을 고찰하는 한편, 그녀의 직접적 경험들의 기록을 현상학적 연구방법으로 탐사한다. 그 결과로서 영성지도가 뿌리하고 있는 기독교 신비주의 관점에서 바라보는 인간의 고난은 집착하는 인간의 소유 방식 속에 있는 자기의 죽음을 통한 초월에 의해 벗어날 수 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 그리고 그 변화의 중심에 십자가 상의 고난받으시는 그리스도와의 연합에 이르는 관상이 있음을 주목하였다. 구체적으로 논문은 신비주의에서의 인간 변화에 대해 세 가지 특성을 주장한다. 먼저, 신비주의에서의 변화는 자기정체성의 변화이다. 줄리안의 두 텍스트를 비교 탐사함을 통해 줄리안의 자기 정체성의 변화 여정을 발견한다. 이 변화는 여성으로서의 자기비하에서 출발하여 보편적 인간으로서의 자기를 회복하고 한 걸음 더 나아가 모성을 하나님의 본성으로 인식하는 데까지 만개하는 영적 여정이다. 둘째로, 신비주의에서의 변화는 탄식하는 내면의 질적 변화이다. 즉, 자기중심적인 데서 타자중심적으로, 자기를 위한 탄식이 그리스도를 위한 연민으로 변화하는 것이다. 그 변화는 결국 그리스도의 마음을 따라 동료 그리스도인들을 위한 연민을 나누어 가지기까지 변화한다. 마지막으로, 신비주의에서의 변화는 그 궁극적 지향점인 대속적 고난에의 참여로 나아가는 변화이다. 여기서 한 가지 유의할 점으로 이 고난은 스스로의 선택과 결정에 의해서 이루어지는 것으로 그러한 ‘자발성’이 일어날 수 있는 ‘내적 자유’가 선행되어야 한다고 지적한다. 결국 본 논문은 고난당하는 이들이 자신을 위해 탄식하는 기도 속에서 고난당하시는 그리스도를 바라볼 것과 영성지도가 이러한 기도의 길을 안내할 것을 제안한다.
Abstract
This study investigates the main mechanism of transformation in Christian mysticism in the context of human suffering and transformation through a literature review and the phenomenological study of Julian of Norwich’s experience and understanding. Julian is an English anchoress from the 14th Century, a century seen as one of the most grievous ages in human history. Her understanding, experience, and transformation in suffering demonstrates that human suffering can be overcome by self-transcendence. That is possible through self-death and transformation from self-centered mourning to other-centered compassion by contemplating Christ on the Cross. There are three parts to transformation in Christian mysticism. First, it is change in Self Identity through a journey from self-disparagement as woman to self-acceptance as a human being toward self-celebration in understanding the maternal nature of God. Secondly, it is a qualitative change of mourning from self-centeredness to other-centeredness. Thirdly, it is change toward participation in redemptive suffering as the ultimate form of transformation. Yet it requires inner-freedom as a preemptive demand, which may desire to choose the redemptive suffering. Therefore I suggest that persons under suffering should pray by mourning their pain and contemplating Christ on the Cross, as the guidance of spiritual direction.
