Abstract
This paper aims at presenting a medieval woman theologian’s notion of passion as a gendered virtue in Showing of Love by Julian of Norwich through the feminist text critics of gender translation. In Showing of Love, passion appears with the word, “virtue,” therefore, passion seems to be a virtue in this text. For Julian of Norwich, the theological notion of passion is closely related to the woman’s body experience such as giving birth to a baby. In due course, Julian’s virtue of passion can be described as a gendered virtue, which is not imposed by the male dominant society such as chastity, obedience, and so on. It is notable that Julian’s notion of passion is not only a virtue but also a “feeling,” which appears in the expression of “feeling of passion.” In other words, for Julian, passion is a feeling as well as virtue. The virtue of passion is based on the woman’s bodily experience, and is combined with both pain and bliss. Both the feelings are closely related to a new life. When we explore Julian’s notion of passion from the perspective of women’s subjectivity and identity, we can interpret that the medieval woman theologian’s virtue of passion is a gendered virtue, which is based on women’s bodily experience.
