한국인의 행복과 웰빙을 위한 기독교의 메시지 : 존 웨슬리의 치유 및 전인적 건강 개념을 중심으로

현재 대한민국의 많은 국민은 개인적 불행과 사회적 고통으로 인해 불행지수가 매우 높다. 이런 때에 기독교는 지친 영혼을 위로하는 구원의 종교이자 공익을 도모하는 사회적 종교로서, 한국인의 불행과 고통을 해결할 큰 잠재력을 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 18세기 영국에서 복음적 부흥운동을 일으켜 사람들의 영혼을 위로했던 웨슬리의 행복에 대한 가르침과 함께 그가 사람들의 전인적 건강과 사회적 건강을 위해 노력했던 실천을 고찰함으로, 기독교가 한국인의 행복과 웰빙에 어떤 기여를 할 수 있는지를 살펴보기 위한 것이다. 웨슬리는 행복의 원천이신 하나님의 사랑을 받는 삶이 가장 행복할 수 있음을 명확히 가르쳤다. 그는 인간의 가장 깊은 영혼의 갈망을 하나님에게서 채우고, 창조된 거룩한 본성에 부합하는 삶을 살아감으로 얻는 행복을 가르쳤다. 그런 의미로 아우구스티누스와 함께 웨슬리는 “하나님은 그분 자신을 위해 우리를 만드셨습니다. 그러므로 우리 심령은 그분 안에서만 만족할 수 있습니다”라고 역설했다. 또한 18세기 영국은, 현재 우리의 상황처럼 개인적 불행과 사회적 고통 문제가 심각했다. 이에 웨슬리는 복음으로 사람의 영혼을 행복하게 했을 뿐만 아니라, 실천적으로도 사람들의 영혼과 육체의 전인적 건강을 돌보고, 빈자의 복지와 약자 보호에 앞장서며, 대중문화를 건전하게 이끌고, 충돌하는 세력 간 평화를 중재해 사회적 고통을 경감시킬 수 있었다. 그 점에서 존 웨슬리의 행복에 대한 가르침과 전인적 건강을 위한 노력을 고찰함으로, 한국인의 행복과 웰빙을 위해 기독교가 어떤 메시지를 던질 수 있으며, 어떻게 사회적 건강에 이바지할 수 있는지 살펴보는 일은, 오늘의 교회의 사역을 활기 있게 하고, 교회가 세상을 섬기는 일에 중요한 통찰과 도전을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Currently, many people in South Korea have very high levels of unhappiness due to personal misery and social suffering. At such a time, Christianity, as a religion of salvation that comforts weary souls and a social religion that promotes the common good, has great potential to address the unhappiness and suffering of Koreans. This study aims to explore how Christianity can contribute to the happiness and well-being of Koreans by examining the teachings on happiness of Wesley, who led an evangelical revival in England in the 18th century to comfort people's souls, and the practices he endeavored to promote holistic health and social well-being. Wesley clearly taught that the happiest life is one that is loved by God, the source of happiness. He taught that happiness comes from satisfying the deepest longings of the human soul in God and living a life in accord with the holy nature in which we were created. In this sense, Wesley, along with Augustine, emphasized that “God has made us for Himself; therefore, we can be satisfied only in Him.” When the 18th century England, similar to the current situation in Korea, faced serious problems of personal unhappiness and social suffering, Wesley was able not only to make people happy in spirit with the gospel, but also to alleviate their suffering in practice by caring for the holistic health of their souls and bodies, advocating for the welfare of the poor and the protection of the human rights of the weak, correcting the popular culture of society in a healthy direction, and promoting social peace. In that regard, an examination of what Christianity has to say about happiness and well-being in Korea, centered on John Wesley's view of happiness and the concept of holistic and social health, and how it can help people's holistic and social health, can energize the work of the church today and provide important insights and challenges for the church's engagement with the world.
