시편은 지금까지 기독교인들이 부른 노래 중 가장 널리 사용된 가사이다. 시편은 본래 노래로 부르도록 만들어졌고, 하나님이 직접 우리에게 주신 찬송가이다. 세계의 많은 교회에서는 매주 예배 시간에 시편을 노래하고 있다. 그러나 오늘날 한국교회에서는 시편을 거의 노래하지 않는다. 안타깝게도, 시편 교독 순서마저 예배에서 빠진 교회가 많다. 지금까지 여러 학자가 시편의 중요성을 설명하고 노래로 불러야 한다고 주장했지만, 교회에 적용하고 예배에서 회중이 부르기에는 현실성이 부족하거나 구체적인 방안을 제시하지 못한 경우가 대부분이다. 이 연구의 목적은 단지 시편을 노래해야 한다는 주장을 넘어서서, 실제로 예배에서 회중이 시편을 노래할 수 있는 방법을 강구하고 소개하는 것이다. 본 연구자는 먼저 시편창의 역사를 살펴보았다. 성경 시대뿐만 아니라, 초대교회와 고대 교부 시대, 중세 시대와 종교개혁 시대, 그리고 18세기 이후 20세기 후반에 이르기까지의 중요 흐름과 변화를 설명하였다. 이 고찰을 통해 시편이 지난 3천 년 동안 꾸준히 노래로 불렸으며, 다양한 시편창의 방법이 개발되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 3장에서는 시편창의 가장 대표적이고 한국의 많은 교회가 활용할 수 있는 세 가지 방법을 제시하였다: 영창(chanting), 운율 시편창(metrical psalm singing), 그리고 응답식 시편창(responsorial psalm singing). 각 방법의 특징과 장단점을 하나씩 살펴보고, 실제 연주 방법과 예를 설명하였다. 영창은 회중이 반복되는 시편 음조에 맞춰서 시편 본문 그대로를 말하는 듯한 리듬으로 노래하는 것이다. 운율 시편창은 어느 곡조의 운율에 맞게 시편 본문을 수정해서 유절형식으로 부르는 것이다. 응답식 시편창은 시편을 읽거나 노래할 때, 그 시편의 핵심 내용을 담고 있는 짧은 후렴을 반복해서 부르는 것이다. 시편창을 경험해 보지 못한 교회에서는 응답식 시편창 방식이 처음 시도하기에 가장 무난하고 적합하다. 본 연구자는 몇몇 시편에 후렴으로 사용하기에 적합한 곡을 현대 예배곡 중심으로 추천하였다. 시편을 노래하는 것이 필요하고 유익하다고 믿는다면, 쉽고 가능한 방법부터 시도해 보는 것이 중요하다.
Abstract
The Psalms are the most widely used lyrics ever sung by Christians. Originally intended to be sung, the Psalms are hymns given to us by God himself. Many churches around the world sing the Psalms in their weekly worship services. However, the Psalms are rarely sung in Korean churches today. In many churches, even the responsive reading of the Psalms is missing from the service. Although several scholars have explained the importance of the Psalms and argued that they should be sung, most of them lacked practicality or did not provide concrete ways to apply them to the church and have congregations sing them in worship. The purpose of this study is to go beyond just arguing that the Psalms should be sung, and to explore and introduce ways in which congregations can actually sing the Psalms in worship. This researcher first reviewed the history of psalm singing. It explained important trends and changes not only from the Old Testament and New Testament times, but also from the early church and the ancient church fathers, the Middle Ages and the Reformation, and the 18th century to the late 20th century. This review shows that the Psalms have been sung consistently over the past 3,000 years, and that various methods of singing the Psalms have developed. Chapter 3 presented three of the most common forms of psalm singing that many Korean churches can utilize: Chanting, metrical psalm singing, and responsorial psalm singing. The features and pros and cons of each method were examined one by one, and actual performance methods and examples were explained. Chanting involves the congregation singing the text of a psalm in a rhythmic manner, following the repeated psalm tone. Metrical psalm singing involves modifying the text of a psalm to fit the rhythm of a certain tune and singing it in strophic form. Responsorial psalm singing involves repeatedly singing a short refrain containing the core content of a psalm when reading or singing a psalm. For congregations that have never sung a psalm before, the method of responsorial psalm singing is the easiest and most appropriate way to start. This researcher has recommended songs, mostly contemporary worship songs, that are suitable for use as refrains in several psalms. If you believe that singing the Psalms is necessary and beneficial, it is important to try it out in an easy and feasible way.
