초록

이 논문을 통해 본회퍼가 말하는 직접성과 간접성의 개념에 대해 『나를 따르라』와 『성도의 공동생활』을 중심으로 어떻게 이해되고 있는지를 살펴보았다, 우선 『나를 따르라』에서는 두 개념이 “예수가 중보자”라는 사실을 강조하는데 사용되며, 예수가 우리 사이에 들어온 이후로 이런 직접성들이 추구하는 것은 원래적인 모습이 아니라, 비본래적이며, 자신을 스스로 속이는 것과 같은 기만이라고 강조했다. 그리고 이런 생각들을 본회퍼가 처한 시대적인 상황과 연관하여 서술하였다. 이를 통해 본회퍼가 강조하는 직접성과 간접성이 그리스도론과 제자도를 이해하는데 얼마나 중요한지를 파악하였다. 그리고 『성도의 공동생활』에서는 ‘그리스도를 통한’ 그리고 ‘그리스도 안에’ 있는 공동체는 예수를 제외한 모든 직접적인 관계를 거부하고, 예수의 중재를 통한 간접적인 섬김 공동체임을 분명히 했다. 이것을 통해 본회퍼에게 직접성과 간접성이 교회론 뿐만 아니라 더 나아가 사회 윤리적 읽기를 위한 좋은 안내가 될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 그리고 『나를 따르라』와 『성도의 공동생활』 외에 다른 저작에서는 하나님의 개념과 공동체 개념, 그리고 인격 개념의 긴밀한 연관성과 인간은 사회성 안에서만 인간으로 존재할 수 있다는 사실을 강조하였다. 또한 인간의 피조성은 “타자를 향하는 지향성”에 있다는 생각과 “하나님은 인간 실존의 한계이면서, 동시에 중심”이라고 강조하였다. 그리고 세상의 현실 전체를 오직 그리스도의 중심으로부터만, 그리고 그 중심을 향하는 운동으로 이해하면서, “자연적인 것”을 포함하여 전통적인 종교적 언어들을 그리스도의 중재를 통한 새로운 읽기를 제시하였다. 이것은 결국 그리스도를 “타인을 위한 존재”라는 언어로, 교회를 “타인을 위한 존재하는 교회”로 이해하기에 이른다고 주장하였다. 마지막으로 본회퍼의 『나를 따르라』와 『성도의 공동생활』에 나타난 직접성과 간접성의 개념이 한국교회에 어떤 실천적인 의미를 주는지를 살펴보았다. 본회퍼의 직접성과 간접성의 이해는 예수가 모든 것의 중보자라는 사실을 강조하면서 가지고 있는 본래적인 의도를 한국 교회가 회복해야 하는 것을 안내한다. 또한 이 개념은 한국교회로 하여금 분열된 교회를 하나로 세우고, 교회로 하여금 ‘타인을 위한 교회’로 나아갈 수 있는 길을 열어줄 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 이 개념은 “탈종교화 시대”를 맞이하는 한국 사회와 한국 교회에 중요한 실천적 방안을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

This paper examines Bonhoeffer's concepts of "immediacy" and "mediacy" as understood primarily through The Cost of Discipleship and Life Together. In The Cost of Discipleship, Bonhoeffer employs these concepts to underscore the fact that "Jesus is the mediator," emphasizing that, since Jesus has come between us, any pursuit of direct relationships is inherently inauthentic, a form of self-deception that fails to reflect an original or genuine state. This study contextualizes Bonhoeffer’s thoughts within his historical circumstances, illustrating how essential immediacy and mediacy are for understanding his Christology and theology of discipleship. Moreover, in Life Together, Bonhoeffer makes clear that a community “through Christ” and “in Christ” rejects all direct relationships except with Jesus, forming instead a community of indirect service mediated through Him. This analysis highlights how, for Bonhoeffer, immediacy and mediacy serve as guiding principles not only in ecclesiology but also as insightful frameworks for a socially ethical reading of his work. In addition to The Cost of Discipleship and Life Together, Bonhoeffer’s other writings emphasize the close interrelation among the concepts of God, community, and personhood, as well as the fact that humanity can exist as truly human only within sociality. Bonhoeffer also stresses that human createdness lies in “orientation toward the other” and that “God is both the boundary and center of human existence.” By understanding all of earthly reality solely from Christ as the center and as a movement toward this center, Bonhoeffer reinterprets traditional religious language, including the “natural,” through the mediation of Christ. This approach ultimately leads to a view of Christ as “existence for others” and of the church as a community existing “for the sake of others.” Finally, this paper considers the practical implications of Bonhoeffer’s concepts of immediacy and mediacy, as presented in The Cost of Discipleship and Life Together, for the Korean church. Bonhoeffer's understanding of immediacy and mediacy emphasizes the essential role of Jesus as the mediator of all things, guiding the Korean church to recover its original intention. This concept also offers a pathway for the Korean church to bridge divisions, fostering unity within the church and advancing toward being a "church for others." Lastly, this understanding may serve as a critical, practical approach for the Korean church and society as they confront the challenges of a “post-religious era.”
