Abstract
This study explores the potential application of Jungian picture analysis, grounded in Carl G. Jung’s analytical psychology, as a therapeutic tool within the field of pastoral counseling. As a specialized form of pastoral care, pastoral counseling primarily aims to provide holistic care for the soul of Christian clients through professional counseling practice. The term “soul” encompasses the integration of thought, emotion, and body, while the notion of “care” includes the processes of healing and restoration. In this light, pastoral counseling can be understood as a ministry that supports the client’s emotional, cognitive, and physical healing, while also promoting the restoration of their relationship with God. Given its emphasis on psychological and spiritual healing, Jungian picture analysis presents meaningful intersections with the goals of pastoral counseling and holds promise as a therapeutic resource in this setting. This method views the client’s drawings as expressions of the psychic world, revealing contents from both the personal and collective unconscious. The central focus lies in symbolic analysis, which fosters consciousness—an essential process in psychological healing. For instance, when clients experience distress due to the projection of the shadow onto peers or same-sex individuals, Jungian picture analysis may facilitate the expression and integration of the shadow through imagery. The process also encourages ego activation and personal associations, enabling transformative encounters with unconscious material. Moreover, this approach supports the conscious realization of archetypal images, particularly those arising from the collective unconscious, through techniques such as amplification. From a Jungian perspective, the image of God is seen as an aspect of the Self; thus, analyzing divine imagery can facilitate spiritual closeness with God. Overall, Jungian picture analysis offers therapeutic and spiritual significance by fostering the integration of the shadow, anima/animus, and the Self within the context of pastoral counseling.
