Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the knowledge base that preservice teachers should know to work with children who have different cultural backgrounds from their own, and the effective pedagogical approaches that teacher education programs should consider in order for preservice teachers to change their stereotypes and prejudice and improve their awareness of children’s cultural diversity. This study reviewed and analyzed the literature about multicultural teacher education in U.S. Based on the review of the literature, the suggestions were offered for the implementation of Korean teacher education program. According to the findings, preservice teachers need to possess the knowledge and skills to develop culturally relevant curriculum, to provide an environment that children can change their prejudice and stereotype, to promote children to be a social agent who can transform social inequality. Also preservice teachers need to have learning opportunities to improve cultural awareness and insights of children’s diverse backgrounds, to have critical reflection of their prejudice and stereotype, and to bridge theory and practices of multicultural education through diverse pedagogical approaches such as cultural awareness, multicultural topic discussion, community field experiences, and culturally relevant lesson plans. The findings provide applicable examples and ideas for Korean preservice teacher education programs that need to prepare propective teachers to have multicultural competencies.
