Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze preservice and inservice of the kindergarten teachers’ knowledge about the content of early childhood mathematics education through a concept map. Twenty-five preservice kindergarten teachers who attended college in Seoul and Kyunggi province and 25 inservice kindergarten teachers in the same areas participated in this study. The subjects were asked to draw a concept map on the content of early childhood mathematics education. To explore the gap between the subjects’ perception and their implementation of mathematics education contents, 25 questionnaires for each of them were employed. The data were analyzed according to NCTM’s content standards(2000), and the Clements(2004) scheme. The results of this study were as follows. Firstly, about superordinate concept of early childhood mathematics education, the most frequent answers were ‘number and operations’, used by preservice and inservice kindergarten teachers. The rarest answers were ‘algebra and patterns’ and ‘data analysis’. About subordinate concept of early childhood mathematics education, the most frequent answer was ‘counting’. Second, preservice kindergarten teachers considered that ‘counting’ was the most important concept. The most frequent practice in the field was also ‘counting’.
