초록

Using a nationally representative data set, the study examines the relationship between attendance in center-based care before entering kindergarten and social-emotional school readiness competencies in kindergarten. Results based on propensity score matching (PSM) point to a small positive association between participation in center-based care and individual social-emotional school readiness competencies. In addition, a moderate association was found between attendance in center-based care and children’s behavioral problems by the end of kindergarten. There were few significant differences between participation in center-based care and children’s social-emotional outcomes across race/ethnicity among the middle-SES groups. However, the impacts of Head Start program varied among low-SES groups. Suggestion for long-term study in terms of early social-emotional development and policy implications are discussed.
