Abstract
This study aims to explore the various forms of power relations experienced by infants in daycare settings and the ways in which they practice ‘care of the self’ through resistance. The participants were five infants enrolled in the zero-year-old class at a private daycare center and three lead teachers. Data were collected through participant observation and interviews. The findings are as follows: First, teachers governed infants through discursive power related to safety, caregiving, and discipline. In response, infants resisted using strategies such as crying, using their bodies, pretending not to hear, smiling, and seeking out alternative authority figures. Second, developmental differences among peers functioned as a form of power, and infants practiced care of the self through actions such as taking objects, pushing, staring, and seeking a higher authority. Third, infants also exhibited resistance to the power of objects arranged in the daycare environment by repeatedly attempting actions, throwing, and sucking. This study sheds light on the dynamics of power and resistance in infants’ daily lives, contributing to the understanding of infants as active subjects rather than passive beings.
