Abstract
This paper is designed to give a historical view of the progress from the Victorian way of staging which Shakespeare's own age never envisaged, to a movement of the opposite way of reviving Shakespearean original practices at the turn of the 20th century. This progress formed the basis for the reconstruction of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in 1997, which accentuates the impact of Shakespeare on the global processes. Thus Victorian Shakespeare provided the way for Global Shakespeare. Shakespearean productions have been influenced by the new directions pioneered by William Poel who rediscovered the dramatic possibilities of Elizabethan staging methods. He challenged the principles of realistic illusions and the historically accurate spectacular on Victorian stage. His initiatives led to the widespread adoption of a simpler staging methods for Shakespearean productions, restoring the primacy of spoken text and Shakespeare's original theatre. The paper's discussion is divided into three chapters: firstly, the advancement of the theatre's social status and the rise of actor-managers; secondly, the revival of Gothic arts and the pictorialism in elaborate stagecraft; thirdly, the challenge to an art of detailed realism and return to Shakespeare's origins. It highlights a broader theatrical movement in the early 20th century away from the heavy decorative styles of the late 19th century towards simpler original staging, and towards the emergence of the new Globe in the late 20th century.
