Abstract

During the 18th century, imperial England expanded its empire both on its home island as well as overseas. The Union of England and Scotland in 1715 caused a national identity crisis in the newly created Great Britain. According to Linda Colley, 18th century Britain could have had a stable national identity due to its wars with France. However, the inherent cultural differences between the English, the Scots, and the Welsh were always frustrating the development of a new national identity. Walter Scott's Waverley reveals the process of creating this new national identity in 18th century Great Britain. Scott explores what it is like to be British through his romantic hero, Edward Waverley. Waverley relies on the dual structure of England and Scotland. The hero is crossing the boundary of these two worlds: past and present, stable and dangerous, reasonable and romantic, modern and traditional, order and disorder. Waverley achieves his identity after experiencing an enchantment with the wild, magical, romantic Highland culture, his involvement in the Jacobite Rebellion, and then the terrible realization of his own betrayal. And Waverley ends with a marriage of the English Waverley-Honor family and the Scottish Bradwardine family. In Waverley, Scott shows his own identity crisis as a Scottish writer, self-conscious of his own national heritage, with an English readership. He sometimes tries to show the miserable reality of Scotland from the Scottish perspective. And he tries to show his nostalgia for what Scotland lost after the Union by reviving the old traditional Celtic culture of the Highlands which, as a result, creates the new myths of Scotland.
