초록
This paper deals with schwa insertion in non-rhotic English dialects. To this end, I will first review the general characteristics of pre-liquid schwa insertion. I will then discuss schwa insertion in terms of the articulatory effort for a transitional continuum between a glide /j, w/ and a final liquid. And I will also provide some historical data to support this argument. As for the pre-r schwa insertion process, on the other hand, I will discuss the controversial issue of opacity in the earlier rule-based and OT accounts on schwa insertion. In order to resolve the problems presented in the earlier works, I will show how this issue can be dealt with in the new account of OT-Candidate Chain (McCarthy 2006, 2007) and what kinds of problems remain. Finally, by illustrating several theoretical advantages, I will propose a version of cyclic/stratal OT in which we apply the necessary constraints and their (re-)ranking in a cyclic way.
