Abstract

In the academia of Sino-Korean literature, there has been a constant debate on need to reflect on previous studies and seek new study directions, but successful results were not obtained. In my opinion, it was a failure factor that the academia has not properly taken into account the impact of the division of Korea on Sino-Korean literature studies. Before the division, the driving force for the studies on Sino-Korean literature was nationalism whose character was diverse, and historical materialism also affected the studies. These conditions competed and cooperated with each other and developed Sino-Korean literature studies. However, after the division Sino-Korean literature was excluded from Korean literature in South Korea, and conservative biased nationalism has become the mainstream of society. As a result, Sino-Korean literature studies did not take root in the academia until the mid-1970s. It is especially sad that Jo Yun-je, the father of Korean literature, presented a national history that embraces left and right to prevent division and devoted all efforts to national integration through social practice, but failed. In South Korea, with the establishment of “The Society of Korean Literature in Chinese”, studies on Sino-Korean literature began in earnest and made many achievements. However, even before overcoming the academic bias caused by division, criticism of nationalism itself increased, and Korean academia seemed to lose its direction for a long time. As the recent reflection on postmodernism has deepened, the recognition that it is appropriate to escape from the negative aspects of nationalism, but it is not desirable to abandon the “national position” itself has emerged. In that sense, it is necessary for Sino-Korean literature academia to reopen the path that Jo Yun-je has followed. The crisis of the study on Sino-Korean literature can be overcome through the writing “the history of Sino-Korean literature” with the critical mind how we can open the era of peace between South and North Korea.
