Abstract

This paper examines how the topic of abrogation of the discriminations against Sool (庶孼: son of a concubine) were brought up and discussed through appeals to the king by looking into the historical changes of appeals about abrogation of the discriminations against Sool. Access to the appeals was not limited to the king and the person who had appealed; they were also publicized according to the importance of their issues. They acted as the ‘prose of politics’ or ‘comments on current topics and society’ by deriving political and social discussions. This paper summarizes the main issues and contents of appeals and provides them in a table in order to examine how the issue of abrogation of the discriminations against Sool was proposed and discussed, how the issue spread socially, and how its points and logics altered historically. Some appeals that helped bring about important progress on solving the abrogation of the discriminations against Sool are Jinsa 進士 Kim Sa-ak 金師諤’s appeal in 1553, Hongmun-gwan Bujehak, 弘文館 副提學 Choi Myeong-kil 崔鳴吉 ’s appeal in 1625, and the appeal to the king signed by one thousand Sool in 1695. In this context, this paper generally examines the historical circumstances related to Sool in the 16th-17th century. These three appeals at different times held to the principle of ‘there is no discrimination against anyone in appointing talented persons.’ In addition, they suggested advanced requirements such as ‘permit Sool to take literary and military service examinations,’ ‘appoint them in important positions after passing the examination,’ and ‘fulfill the detailed rules for appointing Sool in important positions.’ Abrogation of the discriminations against Sool issues were gradually solved by going through the publicizing progress from these appeals as well as going through up-and-down progress in the 16th-17th century. Moreover, the subjects of appeals turned to Sool themselves and tended to be in a group.
