조선후기 서책의 검열과 소통 -『열하일기』를 통해 본 자기 검열-

『열하일기』는 파란을 일으키며 많은 독자들에게 읽혀졌지만, 한편 그 내용과 표현이 문제가 되기도 하였다. 찬사를 보내는 문인들도 있었지만, 보수적인 문인들은 내용과 표현을 대단히 불온하고 품격이 낮은 것으로 비판하였다. 그리하여 작자 燕巖도 이를 수정하였으며, 이를 필사하는 과정에서 문인들은 이를 개작하였다. 결국 자기 검열이라는 과정을 거쳐서, 수많은 『열하일기』필사본들은 원작의 모습과 멀어지게 되었다. 본 논문은 『열하일기』의 異本이 원작의 그것과 어떻게 달라졌는가를 실증적으로 대비하고, 그 의미를 분석하였다. 특히 활자본인 朴榮喆본과의 대비를 통해서 살펴보았으며, 달라진 모습을 일곱 가지의 유형으로 나누어 구체적으로 고찰하였다. ① 명․청 의 국호, 연호, 황제 시호의 표기 문제, ② 천주교(서학) 및 서양 문물에 관한 표기 문제, ③ 여성 미모, 및 성적 연상에 관한 내용, ④ 조선식 한문 표기, ⑤ 한자 자원 및 어원과 관련한 문제, ⑥ 삭제와 교체에 관한 부분, ⑦ 양반, 특히 연암의 체통에 관한 부분의 개작 등으로 분류하여 그 구체적 개작의 모습을 확인하였다. 그 결과 박영철본은 원작의 모습과 많이 달라졌음이 드러났는데, 이는 원작의 훼손이며 改惡이다. 주로 보수적 문인들에 의해 저질러진 개악은 조선의 정치적 사상적 문제와 일정하게 관련되어 나타난 현상으로, 이를 통해 조선 후기의 정치와 사상의 보수적 분위기와 지적 풍토를 짐작할 수 있다.
Abstract
The contents and expressions of “Yulha Journal” have become problematic while the journal has been read to many readers with stirring up trouble. Some writers praised the Journal, but conservative writers criticized them for being extremely rebellious and vulgar. Thus, the writer, Yeunam, revised it, and the literati modified it in the process of transcribing it. In the end, numerous manuscripts of “Yulha Journal” were separated from the original through the process of self-censorship. This paper empirically compared the differences between the original and the different version of “Yulha Journal”, and analyzed the meaning. In particular, we examined through comparison with the printed book of Park, Youngchul and looked at the changes in the seven types. As the result, the version of Park, Youngchul revealed that it was very different from the original work, which is the damage of the original work and a change for the worse. It is a phenomenon that is mainly related to the political and ideological problems of Joseon, which might lead to conservative atmosphere and intellectual climate in the latter phase of the Joseon Dynasty.
