朴趾源과 俞漢雋의 山變에 대한 『過庭錄』의 기록 태도 고찰

이 논문은 박지원과 유한준 간의 산변을 다룬 박종채의 『과정록』 기록을 재검토하였다. 기존 연구는 이 기록을 객관적인 사료처럼 받아들여 두 인물의 관계와 갈등을 조명하는 데 활용해왔다. 그러나 최근 한 연구가 『과정록』 기록의 사실성에 의문을 제기하면서, 갈등의 실제 당사자는 박지원과 유한준이 아닌 박종채와 유한녕이며, 박종채가 자신의 일을 아버지 박지원과 유한준의 일로 바꾸어 실었을지 모른다는 의혹을 제시하였다. 이는 『과정록』 전체의 신빙성과 진정성에 대한 의심으로 연결될 수 있는바, 본 연구는 해당 기록과 관련 맥락을 면밀히 검토하여, 『과정록』의 신빙성과 위선 저술로서의 진정성을 재확인하였다. 구체적으로는 먼저 기존 번역에서 유씨 집안이 이장한 무덤의 주인을 잘못 해석하였음을 지적하고 바로잡았다. 유씨 집안이 이장해온 것은 유한준의 손자가 아닌 종손 유계환의 무덤임을 밝히고, 이를 통해 유씨 집안의 행위가 단순한 개인 간의 갈등이 아닌 종중 차원의 정당한 분산 수호 활동에서 나왔음을 규명했다. 아울러 박종채의 기록 태도를 고찰하여, 그의 기술이 감정적으로 편향되기는 하였으나 산변의 전반적인 상황을 개연성 있게 담고 있으며 문중의 위선사업 실패를 변론하려는 맥락에서 유한준을 부정적인 형상으로 그려내고 있음을 밝혔다. 이는 박종채가 개인적인 차원에서 악의적 왜곡을 한 것이 아니었으며, 아버지와 가문을 위해 최선을 다한 효자이자 충실한 기록자였음을 보여준다. 이를 통해 『과정록』이 편향적이면서도 풍부한 정보를 담고 있는 자료라는 점을 밝히고, 향후 연구에서 이 자료를 활용할 때 박종채의 서술 의도와 맥락을 충분히 고려해야 한다는 점을 확인하였다.
Abstract
This study reexamines Park Jong-chae's record of a burial ground dispute (sanbyeon) between Park Ji-won and Yu Han-jun in Gwajeongnok. Previous studies have utilized this record as objective historical material to illuminate the relationship and conflict between the two figures. However, a recent study questioned the factuality of the Gwajeongnok record, suggesting that the actual parties to the conflict were Park Jong-chae and Yu Han-nyeong, and that Park Jong-chae might have altered his own experience into a conflict between his father Park Ji-won and Yu Han-jun. As this could cast doubt on the overall credibility and authenticity of Gwajeongnok as a work dedicated to honoring ancestors, this study closely examined the relevant records and contexts to reaffirm both its reliability and sincerity. Specifically, this study first identified and corrected a misinterpretation in existing translations regarding the owner of the grave relocated by Yu's family. This study demonstrated that the relocated grave belonged to Yu Gye-hwan, a hereditary successor, rather than Yu Han-jun's grandson, thereby establishing that the Yu family's actions constituted legitimate ancestral land protection at the clan level rather than a personal conflict. Furthermore, through analysis of Park Jong-chae's recording approach, this study found that while his description was emotionally biased, it plausibly captured the overall situation of the burial dispute. His negative portrayal of Yu Han-jun stemmed from his context of defending against his family's failure in ancestral veneration projects. This indicates that Park Jong-chae was not maliciously distorting facts for personal reasons, but rather acting as a dutiful son and faithful recorder striving to honor his father and clan. Through this analysis, this study established that while Gwajeongnok is biased, it contains rich historical information, and future research should fully consider Park Jong-chae's narrative intentions and contexts when utilizing this source.
