Abstract
This paper examines the process through which the Ming dynasty compendium Jinxian Huiyan (今獻彙言) was introduced to Joseon and analyzes its impact. Jinxian Huiyan was compiled by Gao Mingfeng (高鳴鳳) during the Ming dynasty and exists in two versions: a 25-work edition and a 39-work edition. A comparative analysis of these two versions suggests that the 25-work edition is the original version compiled by Gao Mingfeng. The 25-work edition was introduced to Joseon in the sixteenth century and subsequently reprinted at the Gyoseogwan (校書館) using the Byeongja typeface (丙子字). The introduction of Jinxian Huiyan into Joseon holds considerable philological and academic significance. First, it represents a rare instance of a Chinese text being reprinted at the Gyoseogwan, indicating that Jinxian Huiyan was regarded as a particularly important work by those responsible for state publishing at the time. Second, the edition of Jinxian Huiyan printed in Joseon is significant in that it differs substantially in form from editions produced in other countries. The Joseon edition should thus be recognized as a distinctive case of the transmission of Jinxian Huiyan and serves as an important reference for studies on the compilation practices of Ming dynasty texts and the broader patterns of book circulation in East Asia. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Jinxian Huiyan served as a major reference source for scholars in Joseon. Its use can be largely categorized into two areas. First, as evidenced in the works of Yi Hwang (李滉), No Susan (盧守愼), Jeong Gyeongse (鄭經世), and Park Se-chae (朴世采), it was employed as a reference for the critical re-examination of the writings of Zhu Xi (朱熹). Second, the compendium was utilized for research on Chinese historical sites and institutional systems, as demonstrated by the studies of Yun Geun-su (尹根壽), Kim Ju-chin (金柱臣), and Kim Jang-saeng (金長生). Although the influence of Jinxian Huiyan in Joseon was relatively limited, its introduction and patterns of use provide valuable insight into the processes of book circulation in East Asia and into the intellectual landscape of Joseon during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
