Abstract
This paper explores the concept and practice of philology, rooted in the European humanistic tradition, as a theoretical framework for examining the development and challenges of classical Korean studies in Europe over the past decade. It focuses on key academic institutions in Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom—countries with strong traditions in classical studies—and analyzes how Korean classical studies have been institutionalized, how the number of researchers has changed, and how text-centered approaches have evolved. Particular attention is given to the philological tradition of Leiden University, which serves as a point of departure for tracing how this tradition has been transmitted and adapted in Germany and the UK. The study operates on the premise that, in disciplines where methodological training plays a central role in shaping scholarly identity, the academic trajectories of a small number of key researchers offer meaningful insight into the transfer and transformation of intellectual practices across institutional contexts. In addition, the paper surveys classical Korean studies conducted in other parts of Europe, examining how the field has expanded regionally and methodologically. By situating these diverse developments within a comparative framework, the paper highlights how Korean classical texts are being interpreted through philological methods and what kind of intellectual standing they are acquiring within the broader European philological tradition.
