Abstract

This article presents an in-depth examination of the Sulhoe(述懷) 30poems, a work of Autobiographical Sino-Korean Poetry(漢詩) by Dogok(陶谷) Lee Ui-hyeon(李宜顯, 1669〜1745), a prominent literatus of the late Joseon period. The analysis focuses on the circumstances of its composition, its structural features, and the consciousness embodied within the text. The collection was composed through a confluence of factors: Lee’s distinctive preoccupation with record-keeping, his consciousness of succession to his father Lee Se-baek(李世白)’s work of the same title, and an urgent desire to affirm his existence in the face of lineage extinction following the premature death of his only son. Sulhoe follows the formal structure of his father’s work while narrating his family history and turbulent life. Unlike his prose autobiography, which primarily documents his public career, this collection is infused with intimate personal emotions. Notably, it blends lyricism and narrative by expressing remembrance of his father, griefover the loss of his child, resentment and anger at political adversities, and other deeply personal sentiments. Through this work, one can discern both Lee’s pride as a descendant of a distinguished family and his profound sense of responsibility and sorrow as the sole heir of his lineage. Through an investigation of Lee Ui-hyeon’s Sulhoe, this study extends the scope of existing scholarship, which has largely been confined to prose autobiographies. It further demonstrates that Sino-Korean Poetry functioned as an effective medium for articulating both the historical trajectory of the individual and the depths of the inner self.
