Abstract
This study investigates the historical significance of Song Byeong-seon’s resistance and martyrdom in connection with the Eulsa Treaty, focusing on the Cheongpa Diary (Cheongpa Ilgi). The Cheongpa Diary is an exceptional historical source: a deathbed and funeral record of Song Byeong-seon, compiled in 1929 and published in 1958, created by three editors who collected testimonies and writings from seventeen individuals. After the signing of the Eulsa Treaty, Song Byeong-seon submitted two memorial petitions and had a direct audience with King Gojong, presenting his Ten-Article Memorial. He persistently called for the annulment of the treaty and the punishment of the five key collaborators, but ultimately failed due to passive royal response and Yun Cheol-gyu’s deceptions. He returned to his old residence in Seoknam and committed suicide by poison on December 30, 1905. His death came to be regarded as an exemplary act of Confucian moral integrity and loyalty. His disciples mourned him through rituals such as wearing gama and grave vigil practices. The suicide of Gong-im, a female servant, was interpreted as a remarkable example of loyalty that transcended social class and had a wide resonance in contemporary society. King Gojong posthumously bestowed on Song the title Munchung and promoted him to State Councilor, demonstrating state-level commemoration. The Cheongpa Diary contains detailed records of Song’s final moments and burial procedures. On the basis of this source, this study reveals the concrete forms of resistance and martyrdom among Confucian literati during the Eulsa Treaty period, as well as actual documented cases from that time.
