초록

This paper is to show derivations on the adjacency requirement in English to-infinitive clauses within the agree-based system. The adjacency requirement between a verb and its complement is problematic in that it is not structure-based. To derive the adjacency requirement in the course of derivations, this paper proposes the following: V and [+tense] T have an EPP feature that induces an NP movement (T in ECM constructions is [-tense] T, not [+tense] T). Merger operations are preferred over Movement. v or C agrees with its complement's specifier NP in the course of derivations. With these, this paper tries to solve some puzzling data containing multi-adjuncts and data on ditransitive constructions.
