Abstract
This paper deals with interpretation mechanism and its implication on the qualifications of interpreters. Interpretation mechanism, in short, is the inter-relation of three-stage process, decoding, message and encoding with such top-down cognitive aspects as language ability and knowledge about the subject. Interpreters are different from bilinguals in that they work on message not on the language and that they work with knowledge base not with what they hear. We also discuss relevant qualifications to be interpreters. Internal qualifications have direct relations with the mechanism, which contains such essential elements as knowledge of languages, comprehension faculty, memory and insatiable curiosity. The external qualifications related to the final oral output are extrovert personality, good speaking manner, sense of responsibility and physical fittedness. These performance-related qualifications are what make an interpreter a communication coordinator.
