Abstract
This paper examines Korean university student's use of English resultative connectives. In this analysis, ‘resultive connectives’ refers to connectives such as so, therefore, thus, and so on. The most commonly employed connective by the writers is so followed by therefore, which is also observed in students' oral discourse (Park 2003). I claim that students are conscious of the level of formality of a given topic since their use of resultative connectives differs depending on the formality of the topic they write on. That is, students use formal connectives such as therefore, thus, and in conclusion more when they work on a formal topic than when they write on a less formal topic. I also claim that students are aware of the main functions of resultative connectives, i.e. causal and inferential functions. Nonetheless, it is revealed that students need to learn to employ a greater variety of connecting expressions as the kinds of connectives used in their writings are quite limited.
