Abstract
his corpus-based study of verbal collocational patterns of the two English verbs ‘accommodate’ and ‘detect’ has found that these verbs are collocated with lexical modal expressions such as ‘enough,’ ‘impossible,’ and ‘hard’ in the higher clause of these verbs. Unlike those collocations with restrictions on the range of permissible collocates which are taken to be part of native speakers' knowledge of the language (Cruse 1986 ; Atkins and Levin 1991), these lexical modal collocates of the verbs are found to have no such restrictions. Although the I-scores of the collocations such as ‘able to accommodate’ and ‘impossible to detect’ indicate that the strength of lexical attraction between the verbs and their higher clause collocates appears to be higher than 6.0, these collocations are found to be different from restriction-based collocations in nature. This paper argues that frequency-based high I-score itself cannot be taken as a legitimate indication for the position that these collocations under study should be treated as part of the verbs’ semantic information.
