초록
Education is one of the most difficult complex concepts to define. This paper aims to explicate some dominant ways we think of education in current Korean society by looking into various expressions describing education. EDUCATION is understood in terms of various conceptual domains such as GROWING PLANTS/ANIMALS, BUILDING, and JOURNEY. Along with these rather essential metaphors, education is overwhelmingly metaphorized as BUSINESS/COMMERCIAL TRANSACTION in modern Korean society. This is driving us to extreme competition for the survival and pursuit of maximum profit. EDUCATION is also BATTLEFIELD, in which we must beat down the rivals, and it is easily conceived as VICTIM or PATIENT. The major concern in this study is the conceptual metaphor EDUCATION IS BUSINESS/COMMERCIAL TRANSACTION, which is evidenced in various linguistic expressions. We will also see how two conflicting frames are affecting our thoughts in education.
