Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe the topological correspondences of Ryongjoˇng dialect, a Yukjin dialect and Uljin dialect, a Gangwon dialect. Ryongjoˇng dialect has two tone system. One is Phyoˇng-soˇng, the plain low level tone and the other is Chuˇk-soˇng, the marked high level tone. Uljin dialect has three tone system. One is Phyoˇng-soˇng, the plain high level tone and the other two are Chuˇk-soˇng, the marked tones. One of the marked tones is Goˇ-soˇng, the normal low level tone, and the other is Sang-soˇng, the high slight rising tone. In Middle Korean and its descendents, all tone dialect, Chuˇk-soˇng has a strong efficiency which neutralizes any tone that follows. Thus Middle Korean phonologists represented their marked tones with the side-dot device. In this paper I use the traditional side-dot theory without doing anything. Phyoˇng-soˇng is represented without any side-dot like □. Here □ stands for an optional Korean character. Goˇ-soˇng/Chuˇk-soˇng, the marked tone, is represented with one dot like □, and Sang-soˇng, the more marked tone is represented with duble dot like :□. The correspondences of tones of the two dialects are as Table 1. Table 1. the correspondences of tones (표) The correspondences of tone patterns of the two dialects are as Table 2. Table 2. the correspondences of tone patterns (표) In this paper I am contrastively describing various interesting tonal phenomena I can find out in the two dialects.
