Abstract

The domain of lateralization in Korean has been investigated only from the point of view of prosodic phonology based on researchers’ intuition. In this paper, we have discussed lateralization from the point of view of both prosodic phonology and intonational phonology by analyzing 109 utterances. Intonation phrase of intonational phonology is proved to be more suitable than that of prosodic phonology as the domain of lateralization. We argued that lateralization does not occur when there is enough time to pronounce /l/ and /n/ separately because of a long pause intervening between /l/ and /n/ at intonation phrase or accentual phrase boundaries. We also discussed that the prosodic units of prosodic phonology and intonational units of intonational phonology are closely related. We proposed that the text-tune association in intonational phonology should be discussed after the prosodic structure of a sentence is established from the point of view of prosodic phonology and the strong-weak relations of the constituents in the prosodic structure is established from the point of view of metrical phonology.
