Abstract

This paper shows that focusing solely on syntactic constraints on derivations is not enough to understand the variety shown in Floating Quantifier positions and their surface forms. It proposes that understanding of various distributional patterns requires study of discourse factors in addition to the derivational ones that are related to the interpretations of Floating Quantifiers (FQs) and their modification relations. This paper reviews a control analysis on FQ patterns in Kim (2002) and suggests discourse principles to solve its overgeneralization problems. Pointing out the differences between postpositions and other functional Case markers, it claims that deletion of a postposition after an FQ results unrcoverability and that copying of it leads to redundancy of a semantic expression. Therefore FQs cannot have a quantification relation with a complement of a postposition. Derived from a general discourse principle, From old to new flow of information, the current proposal argues that focused elements are responsible for disrupting the quantification relation between an FQ and its host DP. FQs with an emphatic delimiter also support the current claim that focushood is relevant to the interpretation of FQs: A focused element functions as a barrier and intervenes the quantification relation between the FQ and its host DP.
