Abstract

This paper is a report on the Altaic language material that has been investigated, collected, and compiled by Korean scholars, mainly by the members of the Altaic Society of Korea. As almost all Altaic languages are endangered, it is an urgent task for linguists to preserve the languages before their extinction, which includes recording and describing the language data as well as teaching the languages. Preserving endangered Altaic languages is also important for the study of the genealogy of Korean language. So the fieldworks on the Altaic languages generally have two goals: obtaining groundwork material for the genealogical study of Korean language and, more importantly, collecting the material of endangered Altaic languages. The fieldwork by the Altaic Society of Korea has been done in five steps: (i) preparation of questionnaires (ii) interviewing informants and collecting data (iii) digitalization of the collected data (iv) analysis of the data (v) web service of the classified material including words and video clips The Altaic language data are illustrated in terms of the date, place and dialects of the field study, as well as the amount of the material on each dialect and the file size of each digitalized data. The words and video clips from the collected material are partially available on the website, http://altaireal.snu.ac.kr/, in the streaming format, under ASK REAL (Altaic Society of Korea, Researches on the Endangered Altaic Languages). We plan to fully provide good quality data in English as well in the near future. Our website is expected to be the center of the study on the endangered Altaic languages.
