Abstract

This study aims to present a way to define a class named Bound Nouns in Korean and to classify it into several sub-classes based on the characteristics of their modifiers required. We obtained about 170 lexical items for the class NB(Bound Nouns) by examining all common nouns as well as suffixes and noun-postpositions (as contained in the Korean electronic dictionary DECO), and these items are classified into 6 classes according to their modifier types: <NUMN_NB> class contains the bound nouns which demand as modifier a numeral followed by a measure noun; <PRP_NB> class is composed of the NB requiring a proper name as modifier; <SEN_NB> represents the class of the NB which take a sentential modifier; <GI_NB> contains the NB that require as modifier a nominal phrase of the type <V-gi>; <NOUN_NB> is the class of the NB accompanied by a noun modifier; <DET_NB> represents the class of NB that allow as modifier a demonstrative determiner. Bound Nouns can appear in several classes if they allow several types of modifiers, and therefore about 370 bound nouns are obtained. This database of Korean NB will be used as a core information in building systematic electronic dictionaries of Korean.
