초록

This paper looks into the developmental paths taken by the negation markers in Korean, ani, an, -ci aniha-, and -canh-, from a grammaticalization perspective, focusing on their 'deviation' from their erstwhile negation-marking function. A survey based on historical corpora shows that ani became an, both in the so-called 'short form negation', and that during the replacement process, the older one shifted its function to non-prototypical negation functions as a discourse marker. A very prominent phenomenon associated with this change is subjectification, a process whereby meanings become increasingly subjective and evaluative. As for the longer counterparts, -ci aniha- became replaced by its phonologically reduced variant -ci anh- after some period of coexistence, which, in turn, became replaced by still further reduced variant -canh-, a paradigm example of gradual phonological attrition. A noteworthy observation is that the most reduced form typically occurs in a rhetorical context with diverse discursive functions through intersubjectification.
