Abstract
As a new way of teaching English pronunciations, some scholars suggested the utilization of speech analysis programs for both English teachers and students learning English pronunciations. However, experimental researches that confirm the effectiveness of the new teaching method are very rare in the literature. This paper shows a phonetic experiment conducted to prove the effectiveness of the new method. Most of the Koreans who have been trained in making use of Wavesurfer show the acceptable degree of VOT figures in their pronunciations of English word-initial voiced plosives. Further, it is observed that they prefer voice lead to voice lag, though the corresponding stops of their native language belong to voice lag. It is argued that negative transfer from the native language can be easily blocked when adult Korean speakers learn English pronunciations with the use of visual images of sounds, which is possible with a speech analysis program.
