초록
The streets in front of the PNU main gate in Busan are lined with all kinds of store signboards. They consist of four types of characters. Hangeul, Chinese letters, Roman alphabet, or a combination of these. Also the languages represented by these letters are native Korean, Chinese which came from the Chinese letters, Foreign languages, Mixed languages and the Unidentified languages. Recently, it was found that the signboards of foreign languages have rapidly increased, while many Korean signboards have passed away. In order to check out how much foreign language signboard usage has increased or how much Korean signboard usage has decreased, I collected and analyzed the names of 1891 stores in main gate area of Pusan National University in 2006, The languages and letters of store signboards are analyzed here. The languages of these store signboards consisted of 171 Korean words (9.0%), 365 Chinese words (19.3%), 798 foreign words (mostly English) (42.2%), 522 mixed language words (27.6%) and 35 unidentified language words (1.9%). Thus, the language used in most store signboards was a foreign language (mostly English). The letter types of store signboards also consisted of Hangeul 1198 (the ratio 63.3%), Chinese letters 30 (1.6%), foreign letters 571 (30.3%) and mixed letters 92 (4.8%). Thus, the letter used in most store signboards was Hangeul. In 1998, results which I had collected and analyzed from store signboards of the same place, showed that languages consisted of 228 Korean words (10.7%), 931 Chinese words (43.3%), 720 foreign words (mostly English) (33.9%), 235 mixed language words (11.1%), and 11 unidentified language words (0.5%). Thus, the language used in most store signboards was Chinese. The letter types of store signboards also consisted of Hangeul 1604 (the ratio 75.5%), Chinese letters 18 (0.9%), foreign letters 228 (10.7%),and mixed letters 275 (12.9%). Thus, the letter type used in most store signboards was Hangeul. To compare the results of 1998 with those of 2006, it can be found out that Chinese words have sharply decreased, but foreign words (mostly English) have rapidly increased in store signboards of the PUN main gate area in 8 years.
