This paper argues that the English modal auxiliary would can convey implicatures with varying degrees of certainty contra Ward et al. (2003) who claims that epistemic would expresses an implicature that can be empirically verifiable with the requirement of an open proposition. This paper also claims that Song’s (2008) requirement for presupposition in using epistemic would is not tenable. While pointing out these shortcomings, this paper proposes an alternative analysis of epistemic would, by integrating the research results of Perkins (1982), Quirk et al. (1985) and Palmer (1987), and by making use of Groefsema’s (1995) monosemic approach to modal auxiliaries and Talmy’s (1988) force-dynamic approach to modality. In this process we attempt to give a comprehensive account of diverse usages of the modal verb in question and the varying certainty levels of related implicatures in a principled way.
