Corean Primer는 스코틀랜드 장로교 선교사인 존 로스(John Ross, 1842-1915) 목사가 중국 상하이에서 1877년에 간행한 한국어 교재이다. 현전하는 한국어 교재 중에서는 이 책이 서양인이 펴낸 최초의 한국어 교재이다. 이 책은 “Corean Primer”라는 제목 다음에 “BEING LESSONS IN COREAN ON ALL ORDINARY SUBJECTS, TRANSLITERATED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF THE “MANDARIN PRIMER, BY THE SAME AUTHOR.”라는 부제가 달려 있다. 이 부제에서는 일상 생활에 관한 내용의 텍스트를 한국어로 제시하고 그 발음을 Mandarin Primer (1876)에서 적용한 로마자 음역(transliteration)의 원칙에 따랐음을 밝히고 있다. 그런데 이 부제는 Corean Primer의 텍스트가 Mandarin Primer를 그대로 따라 편찬된 것인지 분명하게 드러나지 않고, 또한 Corean Primer의 음역이 Mandarin Primer의 로마자 표기 원칙을 따랐다고 하더라도 중국어와 음운체계가 다른 한국어의 발음을 어떻게 표기하였는지 구체적으로 설명해주지 않는다. 그래서 Corean Primer의 텍스트를 어떻게 형성하였으며, Mandarin Primer의 로마자 표기 원칙을 한국어 발음에 어떻게 적용하였는지 등을 알기 위해서는 두 문헌의 상태를 구체적으로 대비하는 작업이 필요하다. 그러나 그동안 Mandarin Primer의 소재지가 파악되지 않아 이러한 작업을 수행하기 어려웠다. Corean Primer에 대한 그동안의 연구는 주로 한국어 텍스트의 한글 표기와 텍스트로 제시된 한국어 문장의 음운, 어휘 사용 등을 중심으로 이루어져 왔다. 그런데 얼마 전 Mandarin Primer가 미국 하버드대학 Widener 도서관과 일본 동양문고에 소장되어 있음을 알게 되어 이 책의 마이크로필름 파일과 복사본을 구할 수 있었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 이 책의 체제와 구성, 텍스트의 내용, 텍스트의 한국어 문장의 표기, 발음, 의미의 제시 방법 등 한국어 교재로서의 특징을 살펴보고, 이러한 특징들을 Mandarin Primer와 대비하여 Corean Primer의 텍스트 형성 과정과 편찬 기반을 논의해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to investigate the characteristics and background of Korean text formation of the Corean Primer (1877), the first Korean language textbook compiled and edited by John Ross, by comparing the Corean Primer with his Mandarin Primer (1876). Comparing the Corean Primer with Mandarin Primer, we found that those two textbooks share similar features; textbook format and structure, contents of each chapter, and arrangement. Moreover, the principles of Roman letters expressing the Korean pronunciation in Corean Primer adopts identical principles that are applied in the Mandarin Primer. The Mandarin Primer follows the European mode of Roman letters transliteration, and this mode is affected by the orthography of English and Scottish Gaelic which is Ross’s mother tongue. Thus, it is true that Corean Primer adopted the text format and structure of the Mandarin Primer. Measuring the ‘sentence similarity’ by comparing the main text sentences with Corean Primer with those of Mandarin Primer, we found that there is 85.24% sentence similarity, which shows high similarity of main texts between the two Primers. Also regarding the fact that Mandarin Primer adopted the structure and format of Western textbooks at the time, the Corean Primer can be evaluated as a textbook that incorporates the aspects of modern Western textbooks, which was groundbreaking at the time.
