Abstract
In The Clean House which ends with a death being transformed into a ritualistic carnival, Sarah Ruhl deftly deals with the subject of “death” through a frame of “jokes” which, along with elevated emotions and sensory elements, is a central aesthetic device of the play. With an idea that the kind of theatrical effect the play produces on the audience is very analogous to catharsis, which Aristotle explains in Poetics as an ultimate goal of tragedy, this essay attempts to investigate how ‘comic catharsis’ in the play performs ritualistic function. First, we critically examine theories of catharsis bounded mainly within the genre of tragedy to show both possibility and necessity of thinking catharsis related to comedy. We also argue that the play is intrinsically different from traditional Western comedy that is primarily a rational/satiric genre. Finally we analyze unique features of the play’s comic catharsis in comparison with Korean traditional ritual theatre “Byeolsingut.” This intercultural approach is not to disregard historical and cultural discrepancies between the two theatrical forms, but rather, by finding some universal aesthetics beyond the rigid binary distinctions of the West and the East, to provide an effective theoretical framework to illuminate Sarah Ruhl’s unusual play that does not fit into any existing western genre theories and also to open new possibilities for academic discourse of Korean traditional performances to expand its scope into contemporary global theaters.
