Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the phonological phenomenon of the Korean vowel harmony in verbal suffixations within the theory of Government Phonology (GP). The suffixes '-a/-' and '-at/-t are mainly focused on this paper, which are alternative forms of the vowel harmony. The theoretical grounds for the vowel harmony will be presented in terms of the element-based vowel representations and the spreading of the element. The feature of the spreading vowel harmony is element A which is related to the openness of the mouth. When verbal stems end in either /a/ or /o/, vowel harmony is obligatory. The element A in the stem-final vowel spreads to the adjacent vowel tier. However, vowel /i, u, , e/ do not trigger vowel harmony due to their internal elemental organizations. When verbal stems end in a consonant which, in turn, is followed by an empty nucleus, the application of vowel harmony is optional. The feature of the vowel harmony spreads to vowel suffix across the empty nucleus, which means that the spreading effect of the vowel harmony feature has been weakened. If the spreading does not reach vowel suffix, the underlying representation of vowel suffix // is manifested.Vowel /o/ is stronger than vowel /a/ in terms of the spreading effect. It might be attributed to the difference of their internal representations. The vowel /a/ is composed of element A. It means that element A acts as a head, and it plays a role of spreading at the same time. Therefore, the spreading effect of /a/ is weak. However, the vowel /o/ consists of the element U and A. This is because the element U acts as a head while the element A fills only the role of spreading.
