Abstract
Kwon, Kyung-keun, 2007, A study on the phonological strength of Korean vowels, URIMALGEUL: The Korean Language and Literature 40, pp.1～22. This study discusses the phonological strength of Korean vowels. Phonological phenomena are analysed and understood adequately in terms of inherent strength and positional strength. Sonority and aperture are universal scales of the inherent strength of segments. But with the universal sonority or aperture, the relative strength among vowels which belong to the same sound class is not properly described. Moreover, it is necessary to consider the positional strength of prosodic units. The initial of prosodic units is positional strong, the end position positional weak. I try to show the scale of the phonological strength of Korean vowels. To do this, all Korean vowels in hiatus are investigated. According to the results of syllable reduction, the relative phonological strength of Korean vowels is shown. (Pusan National University)
