Abstract
Linguistics is both a discipline in the humanities and a field of natural science. This seemingly obvious fact is often neglected or forgotten, so that some call linguistics just a discipline in the humanities and other regard linguistics as a natural science. We argue for the two-fold nature of linguistics on the basis of theories, methods, and the history of linguistics. Also, it is argued that linguistics is both theoretical and applied in nature. Then, with such (re)understanding, effective methods of teaching linguistics is sought. Movies and other new digital media are useful. In addition, observations in everyday life will help students to understand that language and linguistics are always at their sides.
