초록

This paper studies a well-known Korean particle –nun. –Nun has been acknowledged to mark topic for decades despite a number of controversies regarding the issue of topic and –nun. A comparative study of a sentence initial position which is also taken to be a syntactic strategy to mark topic is done to understand the function of –nun better. This paper adopts Gundel (1988, 1998)’s distinction of referential and relational givenness and applies it to distinguish the identity of sentence initial positioning and –nun. I argue that the function of –nun is to generate an existential presupposition, from which three characteristic properties such as specificity, being generic, and being cognitively active, are derived from. Through comparison with sentences with neutral nominative or accusative case marking, how –nun marked sentences express the above three properties will be illustrated in detail.
