Abstract

This study was conducted to search for alternative acting methods that solve the issue of antinomy caused by language in the acting education. Stanislavsky system acting as a dominating acting method in the domestic theatrical field causes many an abnormal phenomenon in today’s education field. Especially, antinomy caused by language is the main cause of this situation. Hence, this study tries to find as an urgent assignment, acting methods going beyond linguistic description, that is, alternative methods that train acting not dependent upon language. For these alternative acting methods are some prerequisites to be met. First, they should be able to teach ‘corporeality’ without relying on contradiction-causing language. Second, they have to be simpler in the developmental aspect. Third, they have to be acting methods befitting ‘post-’ characteristics of the same age, that is, methods embracing the world view of uncertain contemporary age. Methods befitting the characteristics of the post age as aforementioned are being asked for in that acting methods are results of characteristics of the age being reflected in acting, For this, I brought the concept of ‘process’ in to my study on alternative methods embracing the characteristics of the contemporary age. And on the premise that “process is none other than corporeality,” I search for new acting methods that befit the above mentioned prerequisites. As result, I established an acting method of my own called “method of automatic process”(MAP hereunder). MAP, based on engineering reasoning, interprets structure of acting as simple serial movements of automatic process, and helps students realize ‘corporeal’ acting through their personal training not dependent upon teacher’s linguistic description. Hence this thesis aims at explaining the concept, principle, and method of MAP as a result of studying alternative acting methods.
