Abstract

This study examined the popularization of theater in the 1930s in the Central Soviet region of China. This is part of a study to take a holistic view of China's theater popularization. The process of popularization of plays carried out in the Central Soviet District was examined through the trilateral relationship between theater people (revolutionaries), space, and the public, and the transformation that occurred until the formation of communas aimed at popularizing plays was considered. The Central Soviet District has the spatiality of Communist-controlled areas, rural areas, and wartime capitals. The Red Army established schools and theater organizations to carry out theater popularization in these Soviet districts and used an organized spatial strategy. The biggest challenge in this process was movement. It was the identity of the Red Army and the regional nature of the Soviet region that transformed outside the performance, and through the conversion during the performance, the Red Army, the peasant public, and the Kuomintang soldiers formed a communus.
