조사 ‘가’의 기원에 관한 새로운 해석— 의문첨사설과 일본어 차용설의 비판적 종합 —

A variety of hypotheses have been postulated about the origin of the Korean ‘nominative case’ particle ka, of which the sudden initiation of attestation is problematic. These seemingly incompatible hypotheses can roughly be grouped into three: grammaticalization, emergence, and Japanese influence. In this paper I first investigate the supporting evidence and limitations of two recently popular hypotheses, namely grammaticalization of the interrogative particle -ka and borrowing or influence from the Japanese ‘nominative case’ particle ga, and then suggest a modified version of the former position that integrates elements of the latter. In specific, I argue that the reanalysis of interrogative particle -ka to subject focus marker ka was mediated through a ‘inverted focalized (cleft) question’ construction, and was facilitated by sharp increase in contact with the Japanese language in the first half of the 17th century. This kind of development is not only plausible in a cross-linguistic perspective, but explains the morphosyntactic environment of ka in the earliest attestations and the modern distribution of dialectal particle la(y) as well.

Abstract
