Abstract
This study examines how South Korean theater in the 2020s reimagines the figure of the “New Woman” through parody and historiographic metafiction, moving beyond victim-centered portrayals. Analyzing I, Hyeseok, I Love: Kim Myeong-sun, The Stepmother’s Child, and Kanbu Ferry, the study explores how these productions reconstruct historical narratives through non-linear temporality, intertextuality, and transformation. Drawing on Linda Hutcheon’s theory of historiographic metafiction and Rita Felski’s concept of rethinking modernity, the research argues that New Women are represented not as passive symbols of modernity but as active agents who destabilize its boundaries. These plays blur the line between fiction and history, creating alternative feminist imaginaries that challenge conventional narrative structures. The study also notes the need for deeper engagement with the artistic and literary dimensions of New Women’s works, which have often been subsumed under biographical interpretations.
