Abstract
In order to delineate the disciplinary identity of human resource development(HRD), this study tried to synthesize definitions of human resource development using three approaches - literature reviews, considering additional factors, categorizing definitions. As a result, forty two definitions of human resource development were gathered. And we came up with ten key words in relation to HRD within four dimensions and they introduced four propositions of HRD in this study. Ten key words are as follows: performance, training and development, learning, psychology, system theory, economics, organization, individual, improvement, effectiveness. Four issues from concept analysis are followed by propositions. These propositions and issues revealed the identity of HRD as an applied science. This study proposed three alternative dimensions for identity of HRD. These are disciplinary bias such as education and business administration, organizational performance versus individual learning, and the consensus on HRD policy issues in a broader societal context. At last, this study argues it is necessary to consider the critical HRD approach to overcome the limitations of HRD identities emerged from definitions. Also, there needs to balance between rigor in academics and HRD as an applied discipline of theory and practice. These proposes an alternative identity of HRD, that is openness for the participation towards real world, which is conceptually similar to praxis.
