Abstract

Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Korea, released a plan of advancing vocational education in high school level (May 2010) and vocational high schools have been required to be differentiated from general high schools. Reflecting these circumstances, the primary purpose of this study was to develop a strategy for advancing the quality of vocational high schools in North Chungcheong Province. Optimum number of vocational high schools was estimated, the suitability of specialized area of education in each school was evaluated, and a plan of reinforcing educational competencies was proposed. Literature review, survey, interview, development and analysis by the researchers, and experts review were introduced for this study. The main results of this study were as follows: 1) Optimum number of vocational high schools in North Chungcheong Province was estimated to be 23(four agricultural high schools, ten technical high schools, and nine commercial high schools); 2) Specialized ares of education such as digital electricity, aviation industry, photoelectron, oriental medicine resource and food, biochemical engineering in oriental medicine, medical electronic equipment, semiconductor equipment, bio, new recycled energy, etc. had high suitability with future job prospects, regional strategic industries, and neighboring corporations but some areas didn't have; and 3) To reinforce educational competencies of vocational high schools substantial strategies for students, teachers and curriculum should be implemented under the vision of discovering and educating talented future technicians corresponding to community needs. The conclusions were derived from the results of the study and the recommendations were proposed.
