Abstract
This study investigates the differences in cognitive styles of elementary school students of third grade on the basis of wholist-analytic cognitive styles developed among various kinds of cognitive styles by Riding and Cheema(1991) through individual information-process mode and the students' cognitive differences in the way of immersion, the way of watching, and the way of communication in the course of observation- expression. The results from analyzing the observation-expression according to two cognitive styles revealed the meaningful results in the differences of observationexpression between the two cognitive styles. Firstly, as for the way of immersion, wholist-type students showed strong immersion to the given objects and tried to do their best to express the objects realistically, whereas analytic-type students displayed their own thoughts on the objects rather than expressed the objects by being totally immersed. Secondly, regarding the way of watching, wholist-type students stayed focused on whole picture based on the relations between the whole and the parts, analytic-type students paid attention to the parts, that is, individual parts of the objects. In particular, wholist-type students, compared to the analytic-type ones, exhibited more accuracy on the location of the objects. Lastly, concerning the way of communication, wholist-type students tried to express the objects as they were, while the analytic-type students tended to express the objects subjectively.
