Abstract

This study examines the possible pedagogy of text and intertextualitywhich was explored by French semiotics such as Roland Barthes and JuliaKristeva. The study uses discourse analysis and case studies. The studyreveals that interpreting other person’s art making is to think and toredefine each of the student as individuals who live in Korean society in the21st century. In other words, because artwork can make us thinkcontinuously, forming our own consciousness, and to reject the fixed codeand change, it can be a means reestablish ourselves. In this way, tointerpret the artist, artwork in relation to their context, is to produceanother text, by relating to the interpreter’s personal perspective, taste, andsocial situation. The findings were that my students, who initially thoughtart making and appreciation as well as the making of art and their lives tobe a separated, could integrate art making and interpretation through thereading and writing of text. Also, they could contain the interests and issuesof their own lives in the texts. By investigating social, cultural, and genderroles of the Korean society in which they live, they could make visual unitswhich are based on Korean popular and traditional cultures. By doing so, mystudents could understand that art is essentially metaphoric and symbolicvisual langage. Therefore they could write visual texts using formal, expressive, and symbolic elements, and understand the similarities anddifferences by searching for texts from different cultures and differentperiod. In this way, art making is visual language of life can lead tounderstand the students to understand the world in which they live.
