Abstract
This paper aims to explain the recent employment data. One pattern observed in employment data in Korea has been that employment elasticity is about 0.3 or 0.4 which is defined by the ratio of percentage growth of employment and GDP. It means that if the average growth rate of GDP is about 2 or 3 percent, number of jobs increases annually by about 200-300 thousand. In 2018, however, this pattern has not been observed, but the employment elasticity became from 0.007 to 0.07, which differs too much from the average values of 0.3 to 0.4. This paper shows that the employment elasticity observed in 2018 is not explained and is not consistent with other macroeconomic data like the growth rate of GDP and labor productivity, and also like vacancy data.
